<p>The South Beach Diet is a unique three phase program unlike many other so called dieting programs. It tries to substitutes your bad carbohydrates and fats for good ones. Here is a simplified version of what is about.</p>
<p>Phase 1</p>
<p>Phase 1 is to lasts for two weeks. During this phase, you will eat normal meals of chicken, beef, turkey, fish, and shellfish, lots of vegetables, eggs, cheese, nuts, and garden salads using 100% olive oil for your salad dressing. Everyday you will eat three, well-balanced meals. </p>
<p>You will also eat a snack between breakfast and lunch, and then again between lunch and dinner even if you do not feel like eating these snacks. For the South Beach Diet to work, you need to eat. After dinner, you will even have dessert. During this stage, you can drink all the coffee and tea you want and be sure to drink lots of water. </p>
<p>During this phase, you will cut out all bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, fruit, candy, cake, cookies, ice cream, or sugar. In addition to taking these foods out of your diet temporarily, you will also need to avoid any kind of alcohol. </p>
<p>Phase 2</p>
<p>This phase will last different lengths of time depending on each individual person and how their body reacts. During the past two weeks, the way in which your body was reacting to foods making you overweight was corrected. Those cravings have been squelched and the bad eating habits of the past are gone.</p>
<p>The secret is not that you are eating less food, but eating fewer foods that create cravings and store fat. Once the first phase ends, the weight will continue to come off by staying on the plan. Some of the indulgences you took out of your diet during stage 1 will be added back in.</p>
<p>Phase 3</p>
<p>Phase 3 begins when you have achieved your target weight. To help you sustain your new weight, you will be able to enjoy more food options that are more liberal. Once you get to this phase, you will stay there for the rest of your life. After completing Phase 1 and 2, this phase will feel like normal eating to you. Now you are to eat differently. If your weight starts go up, modify the foods you are eating and the amounts.</p>
<p>Along with losing extra weight and changing the way your body responds to food, your blood chemistry is also changing. Your cardiovascular system is also improving. Heart disease is a leading cause of death where the only symptom of heart attack is often death. Improving your cardiovascular system will add many years to your life.</p>

<p>The South Beach weight loss plan started becomming very popular in the 1990&#8242;s, and is considered to be a successor to the Atkins low carb diet. The South Beach Diet is seen by many as being a much healthier approach to controlled carb dieting. It still teaches you to avoid many refined and processed, high carbohydrate foods though, such as breads, pastries, cakes, soda and chocolate.</p>
<p>The South Beach Diet was created by Dr. Arthur Agatston, an American cardiologist. Unlike other diets, this one doesn&#8217;t label itself as &#8220;low fat&#8221; or &#8220;low carb&#8221;. Instead it trys to help dieters understand how to eat the best foods for them, from all food groups. And it teaches that weight loss can be successfully achieved by eating both good carbs and good fats.</p>
<p>The diet is broken into three distinct sections, with each having its own particular functions. The first part is the strictest, and is designed both to give a quick start to the weight loss and also to develop the pattern of eating a healthier, more stable diet.</p>
<p>One of the biggest reasons for success on The South Beach Diet is no hunger pains. You&#8217;re encouraged to eat at least three good meals and two good snacks every day.</p>
<p>Phase one may seem a bit strict to some, because you&#8217;re trying to severely limit the amount of carbohydrates eaten each day. Thought not as restricted as the Atkins diet is, South Beach generally allows about 30 grams of carbs per day during the first phase. This is done to help jump start your weight loss, and kick the carb cravings most of us have.</p>
<p>Phase two increases the amount of carbs allowed, and adds in more dairy products so it&#8217;s not considered too restrictive. If you&#8217;ve been following the diet plan properly, this phase will feel like a treat. Phase two is usually kept up for however long is needed to lose your desired amount of weight.</p>
<p>Phase three of course is a lifelong maintenance type of thing. Once you&#8217;ve lost all or most of the weight you needed to, you&#8217;ll want to slowly increase the amount of carbs &#8211; good carbs remember &#8211; eaten each day. This has to be done slowly or you&#8217;ll trigger strong cravings for sweets and other simple carbs, and giving into those cravings will put you right back at the beginning.</p>
<p>In short, the South Beach Diet works extremely well. I highly recommend reading the book though, because it explains many of the medical reasons behind our weight gain, weight loss, and how carbs play a part in the entire scheme of things.</p>

<p>Many popular diets are based on reducing fat, carbohydrates and calories. You know you should be eating a healthy diet but what does it consist of? Here&#8217;s what nutritional science has to say about it:</p>
<p>Decrease JUNK fat consumption: Most people don’t have to get rid of all fats or have a diet with ultra low fat. Simply getting rid of excessive junk fat is a step that most of us could take to improve our health. Junk fat includes all processed fats, whether they are hydrogenated fats, polyunsaturated oils that have been heated or fats combined with junk carbs. It’s important to get rid of processed fats as they are the ones that cause flab on your body and clog your arteries.</p>
<p>Decrease JUNK carb consumption: Ultra low carb diets are not needed by most people. However, a large number of people who start low-fat diets keep their carb consumption too high by including lots of highly processed foods. They go from processed high-fat foods to processed low-fat foods. If you read the labels, you’ll see that most manufacturers replace fat with junk carbs in their low-fat products, which doesn’t resolve people’s weight problems. Junk carbs don’t have much fiber and include sugar, flour, fructose (and anything ending in “ose”), cornstarch and fruit juice. Your eyes didn’t play a trick on you. I said fruit juice is a junk carbohydrate.  Opt for the fresh fruit instead. That way, you’ll get the fiber and won’t ingest too many calories. </p>
<p>Decrease JUNK calorie consumption: Ultra low calorie diets are not necessary for most people. An easier way to get rid of junk calorie foods is simply getting rid of processed fats and processed low-fiber carbs. Most of what’s left is lots of veggies, fruit and natural protein. The total number of calories you would ingest will drastically decrease too and your health would improve.</p>
<p>Eat a balanced diet that contains natural foods that our hunter-gatherer ancestors would have been able to eat.  These natural foods include: a lot of whole vegetables, small to moderate portions of meats, fish, seafood and other protein foods, and small portions of fresh seasonal fruit. The vegetables are great for vitamin and fiber intake. Animals, fish and seafood should be grilled, stewed, or baked. This is the diet that our ancestors enjoyed and the diet that results in optimum health for most people. </p>
<p>Think twice before ordering a sugar and fat-laden fast food meal. Could you replace your fries with a salad? How about trading the soda for water? These small and simple steps can make a significant difference if you apply them consistently. At home, you can create healthy and balanced meals using recipes that contain whole and fresh foods that have been exposed to as little processing as possible. Include natural unprocessed foods in all your meals by adding healthy fresh (or frozen) vegetables as side dishes or salads. Stay away from all processed foods with high fat and/or low fiber. </p>
<p>A sample menu:<br />- grilled or steamed fish with steamed yellow beans and broccoli<br />- large mixed salad, with small amounts of olive oil and vinegar or lemon juice for salad dressing<br />- fresh fruit platter without added sugar or cream</p>

There are so many ways with good healthy foods that you can consume while you are on the detox. The best thing to do is to chose something that you like and that you know will be okay for the detox. Raw fruits and vegetables are good for the diet.</p>
<p>If you like to fry, that is fine as long as you use Olive oil, only. You may try cubing potatoes, onion, raw mushroom and a clove of garlic. Then fry all of this in olive oil. This is another great body detox recipe. It is all up to you and what you like to eat.</p>
<p>Finding ways to enjoy your food while on a detox is not complicated at all. Remember that you can have raw honey, olive oil (for frying), sea salt (for taste), raw fruits and vegetables and herbs and spices.</p>
<p>There are several different recipes for you to choose from online as well. If you look online for body detox recipes, there is sure to be plenty of them to chose from. There are sure to be books as well that you can purchase with plenty of recipes.</p>
<p>You may even want to contact a nutritionist to find out the best foods for making body detox recipes. They will know how you can benefit from the certain types of detox foods. They will know what goes the best with what. They may even have good recipes.</p>

Sobe was a rescue from the streets of brooklyn (as were all of my cats).  Iguanas (except for rescued ones) belong in the wild.  Most iguanas die incaptivity because they are not cared for properly.  People keep them in a tank WAY to small,  feed them lettuce (no nutritional value) and crickets (wrong diet since they are herbivores), and don&#8217;t provide adequate UVB lighting, heat, and humidification.  Sobe has all of that in his 8&#8242;x8&#8242;x4&#8242; enclosure, and he also free-roams the house (so he gets plenty of exercise).   Sobe has lived with me since 1999, when he was rescued from a Brooklyn street by my chiropractor.<br />
For anyone who thinks it&#8217;s &#8220;cool&#8221; to own an iguana and wants to go out and buy one, I urge you not to.<br />
It&#8217;s a horrible industry to support.  There are plenty of rescued iguanas who need homes.  And before adopting one, please ask yourself if you have the time, money, and capability to care for them properly.</p>
